A few months ago we approached Alex Simone, one of our first HEROES, about doing a collaboration with us. She was incredibly psyched on the idea and got straight to work. She chose to pair her designs with The Trust for Public Land to support their efforts to save the places we love. We thought you might enjoy some insights into her process and how she went about creating our latest piece.
When I was given the opportunity to create a design for Cause of a Kind, I knew I wanted to make it on my own and I knew I wanted to incorporate the minimalist style that I love. Having studied art since childhood, the opportunity to create something and have it come to life was a dream! I have worked with The Access Fund and American Alpine Club for the past few years and assisted with the efforts to protect the publics lands this year with a variety of congress talks, marches and meetings. As a lifelong rock climber, hiker and outdoor enthusiast, I have spent much of my time living outside enjoying public lands.
As I write this now, I am in Hawaii about to spend the next few weeks traveling around the different islands to explore the outdoor climbing areas. Without public lands and access to them, many of the memories I have of my childhood and recent years would not have existed. I decided instantly that I wanted my cause to be the public land trust, but then my question was what design to create that invoked the ideas of public lands and minimalism. I live in Colorado and whether I am in a desert climate, a tropical climate or back at home, the mountains are my special place. I researched some different designs for inspiration and created this piece to represent the mountain ranges on public land around the country. It is so important to value and protect the lands that we have because with our increasing population and impact on the planet, the planet needs our help to survive.
